Although they are a source that carries limited weight as medical evidence, due to their particular focus, they offer very important opportunities for their use in the academic field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The possibility of <strong>linking key concepts of a pathology to an individual clinical scenario<\/strong> stimulates association and attention, as a critical mental map is established in which the following skills and capacities are engaged and developed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Critical thinking and creativity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The development of communication, presentation, and scientific writing skills<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Emotions (empathy with patients and their psychosocial context)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The association and discrimination of concepts (differential diagnoses)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Decision making (active work and problem solving)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Active clinical learning (clinical experience and skills development)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Motivation through reward (gamification)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Concept retention (spaced and deliberate practice)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Evaluation and self-assessment (formative assessment)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clinical cases can have <strong>different approaches<\/strong>, whether reviewing concepts related to the clinical diagnosis of a pathology; proposing an appropriate therapeutic plan; selecting the necessary diagnostic tests; establishing differential diagnoses; or simply learning to manage patients with the same pathology, who may require a variety of different approaches depending on the severity level, comorbidities, or psychosocial state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal of the clinical case is to <strong>sharpen analytical thinking<\/strong> and act in line with what <strong>real clinical experience demands<\/strong>, which ultimately is based on the application of strict and up-to-date professional protocols. In addition, the documentation and writing of these cases give students practice writing medical histories, a valuable source of clinical information for the medical professional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To achieve maximum performance and benefit in the use of clinical cases as active learning material, it is essential to have a detailed collection and presentation of information, easily implementable using ClinicalKey Student, Osmosis, and Complete Anatomy from Elsevier. A structure correctly adapted to the theoretical-practical academic context and developed by the students themselves to create their own bank of clinical cases should include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Title <\/strong>of the clinical case and participating authors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rationale and relevance<\/strong>: outlines the key concept of the case and why it is suitable for study<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Summary and keywords<\/strong>: essential for understanding the approach of the clinical case and performing quick searches<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Introduction<\/strong>: presents basic information regarding the pathology on which the case is developed (Anatomy, Molecular Biology, Physiology, Pharmacology\u2026)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Clinical case presentation<\/strong>: describes the clinical work scenario. It is important to include the reason for consultation, a detailed medical history, images or initial analytical data<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Diagnostic tests<\/strong>: laboratory analyses, imaging, invasive procedures\u2026<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Diagnosis<\/strong>: the result of the analysis of all the data collected in the previous sections<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Therapeutic plan<\/strong>: according to the diagnosis and the patients&#8217; conditions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Patient progress \/ Case follow-up<\/strong>: it is useful to include a description of the patient&#8217;s evolution and the chronology of steps<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Discussion and conclusions<\/strong>: it should include relevant information about the studied pathology since it will be the section in which an analysis is carried out and the justification of decision-making is presented. The inclusion of bibliographic references is essential<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bibliographic references<\/strong>: recommended texts to study generalities or details not included in the case<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Origin of the clinical case<\/strong>: to differentiate whether it is a fictional or real case. In the latter case, it is important to specify whether the patient has given consent to conduct the clinical case for academic purposes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The clinical case is an essential extract of the clinical experience brought into the classroom<\/strong>. It allows for the development of collaborative work areas in flipped classroom scenarios, structured debates (including peer review), and the development of active learning, both group and individual.
