{"id":2357,"date":"2026-10-06T11:05:01","date_gmt":"2026-10-06T11:05:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/facultyhub.elsevier.com\/en\/?p=2357"},"modified":"2026-10-12T10:35:25","modified_gmt":"2026-10-12T10:35:25","slug":"designing-the-modern-curriculum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/facultyhub.elsevier.com\/en\/designing-the-modern-curriculum","title":{"rendered":"Team-based learning to enable early support in medical education"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On 24 September 2026, Elsevier hosted the webinar \"<strong>Designing&nbsp;the Modern Curriculum: Digital Pedagogy and Responsible&nbsp;AI&nbsp;in Healthcare Education<\/strong>\", where <strong>Professor Paul Shore, <\/strong>Associate Dean for Flexible and Digital Education at The University of Manchester, UK was the guest of this session and has shared insights from his experience running a structured, <strong>team-based<\/strong> approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paul has extensive experience in <strong>active and technology-enhanced learning<\/strong>, particularly <strong>Team-based learning<\/strong>. His teaching experience, coupled with <strong>leadership in curriculum development and digital education<\/strong>, reflects his commitment to preparing students for success in a digitalised world and supporting colleagues in embracing educational innovations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paul highlighted that approximately 3,000 students now participate across programmes including Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Optometry, Audiology, Cancer Biology, Biochemistry and Cancer Genomics. The model is used flexibly: <strong>in integrated curricula it supports curriculum integration and clinical relevance<\/strong>, while in subject-based programmes it drives <strong>engagement, consolidates understanding and develops transferable skills<\/strong>. Students work individually and in teams, moving from <strong>personal accountability<\/strong> to <strong>collective problem-solving<\/strong>. This combination is critical in an AI world; <strong>learners must first form their own judgement, then refine it through discussion, challenge and consensus.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scaling this model required overcoming challenges in space, technology and staff confidence. These were addressed through targeted <strong>investment <\/strong>in digital infrastructure, including the use of a Learning Activity Management System, alongside sustained <strong>staff development<\/strong>. Technology acts as an enabler rather than the focus, supporting large, synchronised, interactive learning across multiple spaces, with rapid feedback and consistent delivery at scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-default is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Offloading can<\/strong> <strong>actually support<\/strong> <strong>learning. Outsourcing (detrimental offloading) can negatively affect learning because the learner bypasses the \u201cstruggle\u201d required for understanding.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paul referred to <strong>cognitive outsourcing<\/strong>, a consistent concern across literature, where students can present work generated by AI as if it was their own work.
