With a \u201cvery distinct culture and flavor of disruption in medical education,\u201d NYU is transforming what it means to study medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From their tuition-free initiative to a three-year medical school program at the NYU-Long Island School of Medicine campus, NYU is evaluating new ways to distinguish themselves as medical education leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Challenge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Preparing students for licensure exams with high-quality content that cements NYU\u2019s program as a leader in medical education<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NYU\u2019s students are dedicated, resourceful, and intelligent, and their needs are changing. The prevailing US medical education model may not be serving them as well as it could be. \u201cThe medical education program in this country is producing excellent doctors,\u201d says Dr. Triola. \u201cBut, it is rooted in an older model, the Flexner Report, which came out around 1908. Here we are, 110 years later. We need to break that lockstep because now we have much better ways to teach, assess, and ensure competence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the pandemic came an opportunity for rapid change, forcing faculty across the country to adapt and reinvent the way they had been teaching. \u201cThe lack of leveraging online instruction and hybrid and other computer systems instruction has been a big missed opportunity in medical education,\u201d said Triola, \u201cAnd the answer is somewhere in the middle, of course, for healthcare in particular.\u201d For NYU, their solution was a hybrid model which blends faculty-created content with Osmosis materials to build effective and content-appropriate courses for its students. But, how could NYU prepare their students for a future that includes new technologies while ensuring they produced good outcomes for student success, both in coursework and beyond?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThinking about how to measure competence and mastery in a way that is reliable across schools and trustworthy to the residency programs when our students move on. That\u2019s something that many schools are working on, but there isn\u2019t yet a ubiquitous good solution for it.\u201d NYU understood the need for innovative solutions that would help support modernized curriculum, engage students, and continue expanding the medical education field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Solution<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Leveraging the power of Osmosis\u2019 medical education platform, built on years of learning science research, to create innovative, customizable solutions for their students<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To uphold its growing reputation as a pioneer in medical education, NYU needed to integrate tools that were as high-quality as their locally created curriculum. With tens of thousands of immersive videos, clinical case questions, flashcards, and high-yield notes that cover physiology, pathology, pharmacology, clinical practice and more, the platform is incredibly comprehensive. Developed and reviewed by MDs, PhDs and other subject-matter experts, all illustrated videos are created by certified or masters-level medical illustrators. Over 3.2 million students and 140+ institutional partners have received a consistent, high-quality, and engaging medical education tool in Osmosis. Due to Osmosis\u2019s extensive reach, there is a high likelihood that students at your institution are already using the platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-group alignwide has-sand-background-color has-background is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--large);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left has-graphite-color has-text-color has-tiempos-text-font-family\" style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);font-style:italic;font-weight:400\">\u201cEvery medical school should realize that products like Osmosis are part of this broad ecosystem that our students live in. I think that medical schools really need to embrace the concept that there\u2019s this larger world of resources out there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an effort to recognize and leverage these resources, NYU sought a partnership with Osmosis that would bring their students the best learning experience possible. To help meet this objective, each institutional partner receives \u201cwhite glove\u201d service. Dedicated support staff are available to guide users on how to leverage each Osmosis feature. This ensures optimal performance that helps meet each institution\u2019s unique needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe weren\u2019t looking to be a passive customer, and we weren\u2019t looking to be a customer like any other,\u201d notes Dr. Triola. Particular to NYU, opportunity arose for a customized, push-notification application programming interface (API) to be developed. This resulted in an NYU Osmosis partnership that is transforming how students care for patients. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The jointly-created API connector links Epic, NYU\u2019s electronic health record system, with Osmosis\u2019s video library. \u201cEvery night, the API looks at all of the new patients that our medical students have admitted to the hospital, looks at their diagnoses, and then queries the list of all of the Osmosis videos to see if there\u2019s a matching content topic.\u201d If the student has not accessed that video recently, Osmosis automatically queues it for the student the next morning before commencing rounds. Either by push notification or email, the student receives a message that says, \u201cHey, you just admitted a patient with congestive heart failure. Here\u2019s the congestive heart failure Osmosis video.\u201d This unique approach provides \u201cjust-in-time\u201d learning solutions that increase student preparedness. In turn, this increases their engagement and confidence as developing healthcare professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Result<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Every student is becoming as successful as they can possibly be, and NYU Grossman School of Medicine is established as the #2 institution in medical research<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the adoption of Osmosis, NYU has met the changing needs of its students in new, dynamic ways. This means faculty can ensure the Osmosis platform supports their program\u2019s learning goals by serving up relevant, high-quality content. The platform integrates directly with their learning management system (LMS), making it easy to align Osmosis content and resources to their curriculum. NYU faculty are \u201creally putting their heart and soul into reinventing these courses,\u201d according to Dr. Triola, and staying on the cutting edge so they maintain their status as leaders in medical research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s not just the quality of the education materials, but also the digital footprint that students leave when using materials this way. That helps us on the analytics side to really be able to have a much deeper insight into each of our students\u2019 progress, their excellence, their achievement of mastery.\u201d To this end, Osmosis\u2019s in-depth analytics allows faculty to identify and remediate at-risk (and failing) students as early as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Push-Notifications for Just-in-time Clinical Learning<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Custom-built solutions like NYU\u2019s API project are pushing them even further as leaders in medical education. \u201cWe just started it in January and we\u2019ve already sent out 255 video recommendations to our students. They love it.
