{"id":1602,"date":"2026-08-13T13:05:25","date_gmt":"2026-08-13T13:05:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/facultyhub.elsevier.com\/en\/?p=1602"},"modified":"2026-08-13T13:55:07","modified_gmt":"2026-08-13T13:55:07","slug":"the-reality-of-ai-in-the-classroom-of-medical-and-nursing-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/facultyhub.elsevier.com\/en\/the-reality-of-ai-in-the-classroom-of-medical-and-nursing-students","title":{"rendered":"The Reality of AI in the classroom of medical and nursing students"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elsevier organised <strong>\u2018\u2019<\/strong><strong><em>The Reality of AI in the classroom of medical and nursing students\u2019\u2019 <\/em><\/strong>a one day thought leadership dialogue that was held in Cape Town, South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The one day event was attended by medical and health sciences deans and educators from across South Africa to share ideas, current status and future of health sciences education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>\u2018\u2019The State of the AI Nation \u2014 Are we where we expected to be?\u2019\u2019 <\/em> David Game, Senior Vice President, Medical Education Partnerships at Elsevier.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">David started the dialogue by discussing with our honored guests, , the past 4 years of AI and the application of AI to healthcare education. David was also focusing on the future and identify the trends that will impact healthcare education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>\u2018\u2019Feedback from the Classroom \u2014 Examples of AI usage\u2019\u2019<\/em><\/strong><strong> Ranjan Nayyar UX Research Manager &#8211; Elsevier Health Education.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An interactive session led by Ranjan where he was focusing more on usage trends that were seen globally and how those align with the participants experience of AI usage in their institutions with special emphasis on the South Africa context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>\u2018\u2019AI and Mental Health \u2014 Impact on students beyond the classroom and on learning\u2019\u2019 <\/em><\/strong><em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">David Game enriched the discussion and engagement of the attendees by sharing the practical impact on students by AI. We quoted from David\u2019s presentation \u2018\u2019AI is not longer just an issue for teaching and learning but has broader implications for our students mental health and how they interact with each other, with faculty and the world of AI. What are the implications of this for teaching and learning practice, how far can we adapt and where should we \u201chold the line\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>\u2018\u2019Solving for Accuracy and Representation in Education AI\u2019\u2019<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Dr Andrew O\u2019Malley Head of Education Division, School of Medicine, University of St Andrews<\/strong> Dr Andrew shared his experiences on what gets wrong for clinical trainings, why it matters most for diverse population and how they engineered a simulator that holds up. Andrew shared the challenges being faced as the capacity of students\u00b8communication skills, AI output accuracy and several problems faced working with AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The day was wrapped up with an engaging discussion led by David Game that covered AI strategies for classroom with various topics as academic integrity, critical thinking and readiness for learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Elsevier organised \u2018\u2019The Reality of AI in the classroom of medical and nursing students\u2019\u2019 a one day thought leadership dialogue that was held in Cape Town, South Africa.
