Is Health Education Ready?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Thursday 18 June 2026, Elsevier hosted the webinar <em><a href=\"https:\/\/facultyhub.elsevier.com\/en\/ai-in-health-education-webinar\">AI in Health Education: Preparing Students for Real-World Clinical Readiness<\/a><\/em> &#8211; bringing together health educators and faculty from English and Spanish-speaking regions to explore one of the most pressing questions in the field today: <strong>how do we prepare the next generation of health professionals to practice in a world increasingly shaped by AI?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The webinar featured three panelists &#8211; <strong>David Game<\/strong>, SVP of Medical Education Partnerships at Elsevier; <strong>Dr Philip Xiu<\/strong>, GP and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Leeds; and <strong>Dr Ximena Alvira<\/strong>, Clinical and Research Manager at Elsevier &#8211; each offering a distinct perspective on the opportunities and responsibilities that AI brings to health education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the session, we ran <strong>four live poll questions<\/strong> to better understand how faculty members across the globe are currently approaching and perceiving AI in health education. The results painted a revealing picture of a field that recognizes the growing significance of AI, but is still working out how to respond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What the audience told us<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-group alignfull has-sand-background-color has-background is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--large);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--large);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--large)\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns are-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-f15824f9 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small)\">Q1: How is your institution currently approaching AI in health education?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For most institutions, the conversation is happening but formal frameworks are lagging behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Only 29% said they have a formal AI policy in place<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The majority (37%) are still discussing it internally<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>18% said they allow AI but without clear guidelines<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>16% haven&#8217;t addressed it yet<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow education?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Educators are most worried about over-reliance on AI and the impact on foundational clinical skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>49% said over-reliance on AI-generated content<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>34% said students never developing foundational clinical skills<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>15% said loss of human connection in clinical training<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Only 2% said widening inequalities in access to AI tools<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small)\">Q3: Where should AI be introduced in the health sciences curriculum?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was strong consensus that AI literacy should not be an afterthought and it must be woven into the curriculum from the very beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The majority (65%) said from day one and integrated throughout the curriculum<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>25% said only in later clinical years <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>10% said it should be introduced as a standalone subject<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Notably, 0% said it should not be taught at all<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"463\" height=\"432\" wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small)\">Q4: Who should be responsible for ensuring students use AI critically and safely?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Respondents placed responsibility firmly with institutions &#8211; signaling that educators are looking for systemic, structural solutions rather than leaving individuals to navigate AI on their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>67% said institutions should be responsible, through curriculum design<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>14% said professional regulatory bodies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>13% said the students themselves<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Only 6% said individual faculty members <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img field at a pivotal moment. The appetite for change is there &#8211; faculty overwhelmingly want AI integrated early and taught thoughtfully \u2014 but the infrastructure to support that is still being built.
